I noticed this sticker for the Great Northern Conc

I noticed this sticker for the Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race on my clipboard and was taken aback.

Not by the fact that engineers have hurtled themselves down hills five at a time in a 300 pound toboggan made of concrete for 50 years— that’s not surprising at all.

What gave me pause was that when I went to the event in Waterloo in 1999, 25 years previous felt like a lifetime. Because it was.

But now, the last 25 years feels like a blink of an eye. Granted, a lot has happened in my life since then — finishing 2 university degrees, marriage, a career, a kid. But I remember those days in Waterloo with a clarity that I cannot explain.

I grew up on an acreage outside of Stony Plain, Alberta — just off Campsite Road and Township Road 540. TWP540 is six miles from and runs parallel to the Parkland Highway (Hwy 16A). It is known locally as the Six Mile Road.
